The Cuban missile crisis marks the most danger we have ever faced as a country, and was the peak of the Cold War. It is generally regarded as the tipping point of the nuclear race and the aggression between us and the Soviet Union. The situation was so chaotic and tense that most people alive during the crisis believed that the world was going to end in a nuclear war, and the Cuban missile crisis would result in the destruction of the worlds 2 biggest superpowers. It also marked the biggest period of embarrassment to the Soviet Union, as they backed out of a dangerous situation that they started by removing their missiles from Cuba. Many books were written showing inside looks into the most dangerous period in American history, books that are still read today. The crisis also represents the beginning of detente between the 2 countries.
